Great post, wee and great banner!! And don't worry too much about the previous one... the groundhog would have seen his shadow anyway. Damn ceremony is rigged.

wee, you take my breath away. I had my heart in my mouth when Finn took off after the coyote. And your lovely writing: *swoon*

wee-- that photo is stunning! And your dog stops and returns when you scream? Huh. Gotta get some of that mojo . .

I once saw a fox running through the woods behind my cottage. It was winter and I heard a barking noise. I looked out the window and there was a little red fox. By the sound of it's cries, I think it may have been lost from the pack.

no worries, wee! the wooly-bear caterpillars are predicting a short easy winter...and i they are much more reliable than the rodents shadows! xo

OH. MY. GOD. Wee! I totally love the new banner! It's gorgeous!

wow the banner is so lovely...have I said that already? and as for the weather, we got absolutely socked in with rain today. i felt as though i was excused from doing anything at all that was necessary and just flopped down on the sofa and read the NY Times and the Oregonian and whatever else was within reach. winter's not all that bad...

the more I look at photos and illos (snurgle) of FinnyJane, the more I want her to be our dog...or the mother of our dog. I don't suppose you're thinking of breeding her anytime soon and then hand-delivering the puppies to Sweden? *bats eyelashes at you*

I think your title should be winter wanderings for all of that tromping around that you two do! I too like to look at all of the snowy footprints. Especially the ones that skitter across our porch :)

Setting: A house on the side of a mountain sourounded by several hundred acres of 80-100 year old northern hardwoods, pines and hemlocks with batches of understory here and there.

(The 14:10:45 message went out too soon.) Continued: This house has a lot of glass and I often wander from area to area staring off into the woods. A few minutes ago, with a mug of tea in hand, I noticed a slight movement about 200 feet into the woods. During the next few minutes I counted 11 white tail deer drifting in and out of sight. Shortly thereafter I was looking at my first encounter with blogs and enjoyed reading of your experience with your dog and the coyote. I shall read more of your work.

Great story - so vivid! And the way you kept analyzing the tracks... quiet and meditative like a winter walk... I smiled when you finally used the word "forensic."
